Abstract: γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a kind of non-protein natural amino acid. It widely existed in animals and plants, and it is one of main inhibitory neurotransmitters in central nervous system of mammal. It has functions of sedation, anticonvulsant, brain tonic action, strengthening the animal immunity, stress resistance, antioxidation, etc. It has significant effects on the production performance, heat stress resistance, reproductive performance and carcass quality of animals. The biological properties of GABA and its application in animal production were discussed.
