Abstract: The paper reviews novel methods proposed in recent years for rapid detection of E. coli. These methods include enzymatic method and its combination with multiple-tube fermentation technique, membrane filter technique, solid-phase cytometry and immunological methods, and they also include bio-molecular electronics techniques （sensors）. Their characteristics, sensitivity and rapidity were analyzed, and their drawbacks were also discussed. Finally, the possible applications of these methods were proposed.
