Abstract: MC1R is one of the important candidate genes that are associated with the regulation of mammalian coat colors. Melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) is encoded by this gene which plays important roles in the metabolism of mammalian melanin. In the present study, the structures of skin from the black, white, brown and white with black-spots Taihang Goats were observed using the HE staining method, respectively. Immunohistochemistry assay was performed to study the expression of MC1R in the skins of goats with different coat colors. Results showed that the skins of the Taihang Goats consisted of epidermis, subdermal and subcutaneous connective tissue. No expression MC1R of was found in epidermis and subdermal in the tissues from goats with different coat colors. However, the expression MC1R was observed in the hair follicles of the black, brown and white with black- spots Taihang Goats which was mainly distributed in the outer root sheath. The results obtained in this study provide a basis for the further genetic selection of Taihang Goats.
