Abstract: Probiotics can be used as a green feed additive in ruminant feed and is considered as a potential substitution of antibiotics, hormones and agricultural chemicals. A large number of studies have shown that firstly, beneficial microbial agents play essential role in regulating the normal bacterial populations in animal intestinal tract and can improve the metabolic level and the utilization of nutrients in animals; secondly, they can enhance the immunological function of animals and then improve immunity and disease resistance; thirdly, the application of them contributes to the control of environmental pollution and purification of environment. The main function and associated acting mechanisms of beneficial microorganisms as well as their application in ruminant nutrition and feed in recent years were reviewed.
