Abstract: The gut microbiota affects the growth and development and a number of related important economic traits in livestock and poultry. This paper reviews the research advances on the regulative roles of various feed additives in gut microbiota and growth traits in livestock and poultry. From the introduction of involved biological mechanism, the research progress of impacts of feed additives on gut microbiota and growth traits in livestock and poultry as well as effects of gut microbiota transplantation on host growth traits are enumerated. Furthermore, the practices of using feed additives to influence the gut microbiota and to improve the growth performance in livestock and poultry are summarized.
