Abstract: Energy feed is one of the most crucial types of feed in pig production. At present, the most commonly used energy feed in pig feed is corn in China. However, with the yearly increase of China′s corn imports and the rapid development of bioenergy industry, the price of corn for feed industry has been increasing. Unconventional feed resources are abundant in China, the use of unconventional energy feed to replace corn can not only ease the pressure of China′s corn imports, but also reduce the cost of feed to bring higher economic benefits for farmers. This study reviews the current status of several unconventional energy feeds, including aged wheat and wheat bran, rice bran and rice bran meal, sorghum, barley and cassava, in pig production, with a view to broadening the sources of energy feeds in pig farming in China and alleviating the pressure on the use of corn in feed.
