Abstract: Mongolian sheep is the most numerous and widely distributed coarse-haired sheep breed in China. It has strong physique, high adaptability, and superior tolerance to extremely extensive feeding and management conditions. The strong ability of tail fat deposition makes it a good resistance to adversity. However, excessive tail fat deposition is not good for meeting the consumer′s demand. Combining the existing data and research results, this review summarizes the origin of Mongolian sheep and the regulation mechanism of tail fat deposition, in hoping to lay a scientific foundation for understanding the origin and clarifying the breeding goals of Mongolian sheep.
