Abstract: In order to alleviate the status of lacking pasture in winter and limited available varieties of high quality forage in Ningnan mountain area and to provide scientific basis for the forage utilization in this region, a silage preparation experiment was conducted with two maize varieties （Jingang No.50 and Tnyu No.168） and five gramineous forage varieties （Dalishi sweet sorghum, Guyuan forage sorghum, grain amaranth, Danyan 444, Dongmu 70 alfalfa）. The quality and nutritional value of the silage prepared with different varieties of forage was determined. The results showed that silage could be successfully prepared with every single forage variety of the seven tested forage varieties, while poor quality was observed in silage singlely prepared with grain amaranth or Dongmu 70 alfalfa, indicating the necessity of the appropriately mixed use of these two forage varieties.
