Abstract: [Objective] The aim was to study effects of traditional Chinese medicine additive(TCMA)on the growth performance of Hainan Wenchang chicken and to evaluate its safety to mouse. [Method] 180 female Wenchang chicken were randomly assigned to 5 groups with 3 replications each, each replication contain 12 chickens. Diets containing 0 and 600 mg/kg aureomycin as well as 0. 1%, 0.2% and 0.3% TCMA were fed to group 1 ,group 2,goup 3 ,group 4 and group 5 ,respectively. The test for growth lasted 6 weeks, among them body weight was measured per 7 days. Acute toxicity test and accumulation toxicity test were used to evaluate the safety of TCMA. [Result] Ultimate body weight in 0.2% TCMA was improved significantly (P〈0.05). The median lethal dose (LD50)for mouse was more than 10 g/(kg-bw), and the accumulation coefficient K was more than 5. [Conclusion] TCMA is a safe feed additive with high performance.
